That's not to say these issues aren't important, but things can and frequently are handled better and more effectively even by groups like the HRC regardless of our opinioins of them. The days for groups like "ACT UP" and dozens of smaller groups related to the greater LGBTQI community that try to separate LGBTQI issues as something different from the greater over-culture are are numbered. We may not have acheived full integration yet, but it's happeneing and it's a good thing. In regards to violence against LGBTQI persons, well, I'm at a loss of what can be done other than education and sensitivity training within schools and places of education. We will be normalized and, in the media, it seems that too is slowly taking place as well. And that feels like a lot! Actually, I probably read about 3-4 books a month between riding the bus, reading in bed, and sitting on the can. Right now I'm trying to read through the Harry Potter series since everyone has always raved about it. It's alright. Fun, but not my favorite. Also reading a writer's memoir, Black Milk, by Elif Shafak...about grappling with the identity of being a writer first, and then everything else next (like a woman, a wife, a mother, etc). First, there's the illusion of being "published" albeit with the Solipsistic Press, Uninc. Second, it only confirms the excruciating masochism involved in trying to write for publication; and yet, and yet, I still see my stuff up there in front of God and Everyone Who Wants to See It If They Only Would. It is nice to see it there, It is MINE. Third, blogging has made me a realist about just how damn brilliant I am --- not very. But there are a few gem-like moments. So, at least I have become realistic and I have to feed the thing every day and that makes me write. If it's junk, no big deal --- what's one anonymous viewer and robot's comment anyway?.

http://www.thetortoisefactor.com (WordPress)

The only time starting with a concept worked for me was back in freshman comp and even then I started with a splatter of words under a "theme." They have made me what I am even though I was raised pretty much straight and came to a realization of my queer identity fairly late in life. I was raised as something I subconsciously knew I *wasn't* but wasn't certain how to articulate my differences.
